Glenbrook Students Learn About Safety

Students spend  6 hours a day at school which means that have to be prepared for an emergency.  We work hard to make sure that Glenbrook students are always safe and know what to do should an emergency occur.  Very early in the school year we begin practicing 3 major  types of drills; Fire Drill, Severe Weather Drill and Lock Down Drill. This week was the first time we practiced all 3 drills and our students did an impressive job!

It looks very quiet in these pictures; like no one is in the building.  That is because we were practicing our Lock Down Drill.  Student learn that when there is danger they need to listen very quietly to their teacher. Sometimes we need to leave the building and get far away, other times we just lock our doors and remain very quiet.  Officer Ed, our DARE Officer from the Streamwood Police Department, joined us for this drill. He was very impressed at how quickly our classrooms locked down and he didn't hear a peep!

We hope that we will never have to experience weather severe enough that we need to take cover, but if we do, the students know the drill.  The students very quietly walked in a line to their take cover space and got into a safe position.  They learned how to protect their heads and bodies the best way they could.

Fireman Tim from the Streamwood Fire Department came with another fireman and his big red truck to see how well we were able to do a fire drill.  He said we did a fantastic job exiting the building quickly and quietly.  The students and their teachers moved far away and checked their list to be sure that the entire class was safe and accounted for.  Once it was safe to return, we all came back inside.

We'll practice the drills a couple more times this school year to make sure that we know exactly what to do. Don't forget to practice at home too so that your children know what to do if there is an emergency at home. Make a plan and practice it to ensure safety for all!
