The Mid-Day Break

Our students certainly enjoy their mid-day break, and after a busy morning of learning, they deserve it. This year our food services has made several changes to their program adding specialty meals for dietary restrictions to their already improved menu.  The students seem to really enjoy the meals this year too. We now offer two main course choices along with our fruit, vegetable, and milk options.  Of course, for those who eat well, we have a few items on the snack cart for purchase as well as a weekly option to purchase an ice cream treat.

Our district and students value the environment and work hard to recycle.  This year we have added more environmentally friendly trays and containers and have eliminated straws to our lunch menu.  According to Get Green Now, it takes up to 200 years to decompose a straw and Americans use over 500 million straws per year (getgreennow.com, 2019) If we can help lower that number, we are willing and able!

We've had some beautiful visitors with us for the past week and the students have enjoyed their company!  These 4 sandhill cranes have been hanging out in our field and watching our students play throughout recess.  We were all surprised to see these birds. Many of the students had never seen them before.  Upon researching, I found that over the past 35 years they have been moving into Illinois. They are a protected species, so likely we will see more of them.  We should enjoy them while we can, because they will likely migrate south for the winter.
