Another Eventful Week At Glenbrook
Each week gets busier and busier at Glenbrook, however throughout the week our students continually showed Hawk Pride as they worked with each other outside of the community, with their families and as we welcomed visitors into our building.
Our 6th graders spent all day Monday at YMCA Camp Duncan in Ingleside, IL. This bi-annual trip is a special way to bring our student leaders together to work on team building and science concepts simultaneously. This year the weather was perfect as were our students. They worked hard and showed true collaboration as they attempted some very difficult tasks. It was truly HAWK PRIDE at it's finest!
What could be more fun than playing math games? Well, I'll tell you. It's eating ice cream when you are done! At Glenbrook's Math Night/Ice Cream Social, the students and their parents earn toppings on their ice cream sundae for every math game they play. It's a fun way to get enthused about math. I will tell you that once they got started the students and their parents had so much fun playing the games they almost forgot to stop for ice cream!
Friday was a very special day for our students as we honored and celebrated our nations veterans with our annual Veterans Day celebration. The day started with an opening flag ceremony. Our 6th grade student led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Mrs. DeRoo then read, in part, President Obama's Veterans Day Proclamation. We followed the proclamation with 2 minutes of silence and the playing of Taps by Tom Day a Marine who founded Bugles Across America. This organization's goal is that every veteran has a bugler available to play Taps at his/her funeral. I was so proud of our students as they very respectfully entered our building silently following the playing of Taps. It was a beautiful moment.
The rest of the day we were fortunate enough to have a couple of veterans visit us to tell the students about their experiences in the service. Additionally students read a variety of books and completed many activities related to Veterans Day. Many classrooms wrote letters and cards which will be mailed off to veterans who are currently serving in our military.
Mr. Joe Tremmel, Mrs. Bury's father, and Mr. Jack Kinyon, a long time family friend of the Tremmel's visited with the 6th graders. Mr. Tremmel served in the Vietnam War and Mr. Kinyon served in World War II.
