Fall Fun All Week!

This week was full of celebration and fun!  It was a great way to wind up October and bring in November.

Halloween Parties
Each classroom celebrated in their own way. From parades to movies, from donut eating to fruit kabobs, each one enjoyed an afternoon celebration of the American tradition.  We had lots of parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles join us too. It was a great day of fun and fright!

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)

November 1 is a Mexican holiday which is to pray for and remember those who have died. Students in Mrs. Diaz-Blanco's class partnered with Mrs. Jagielski's class to learn about the influences of the Mesoamerican and Spanish cultures in the celebration of the Day of the Dead. They learned about the beliefs  that ancient groups in Mexico, such as the Olmecs, Toltecs and Aztecs , had about death and the rituals to honor their dead ones. When the Spanish arrived, they brought with them Catholic traditions and they all mixed to create the amazing celebration of the Day of the Death. Students created Cempazutchil flowers (Mexican marigold) commonly used to decorate on Dia de Muertos.

Author Visit

Author Mary Winn Heider visited Glenbrook on Wednesday to share her inspiring message about how she became a published writer.  She shared her powerful writer's "Breakthough Tips" that helped her as she perservered through her writing struggles.  Her first book, published by Disney, The Mortification of Fovea Munson, is funny, original and surprising.  4th - 6th grade students enjoyed their time with Mrs. Munson as they listened to her story, had books signed, and a small group held a reception with her.  Thank you PTA for the opportunity to meet this amazing and inspiring woman!

BINGO/LOTERIA
Our fall BINGO/LOTERIA was once again a great success.  Thanks to Stephanie LeMaire, Diane Plug and Erin Sorellino, we had a great turn out and loads of fun.  Also thanks to Dylan and Drew Plug for running our Cafe. A special thanks to  Antonio Sorellino  and Jose Alcantara for the music and serving as callers for the games.  We couldn't have enjoyed such a wonderful event without your constant support!

Celebrating Reading!
On Wednesday, October 24th we celebrated Read for the Record Day!  The actual event is really on October 25th, however, since students were not in school that day we moved it up.  Glenbrook staff and students didn't want to miss the opportunity for a celebration of literacy!

Linda Ragsdale - Author Visit
Mrs. Ragsdale is an award winning author, illustrator, speaker and peacemaker.  She shared an inspiring message with our children about difference, being open to one another and peace.  She has several wonderful books written for children about this topic which include beautiful illustrations.  If you are interested in learning her story her website is http://thepeacedragon.com/about/president-bio
After hearing about her books and her message of peace, the students were able to get their own copies of her books autographed. Then, several students, who were chosen from a "Gotcha raffle," enjoyed a reception of cookies and juice with the author. Thank you to our PTA for sponsoring the event.

Guest Readers
Read for the Record Day is an annual event that brings adults together with children in order to build literacy skills. This year we were luck enough to have 3 adults from our central office join our kindergarten and Exceptional Needs classrooms to read to them. A special thanks to Mr. Mario Pestana (not pictured), Mrs. Robyn Cornelissen and Mrs. Trisha Shrode along with 2 of our 4th grade students for helping us to enjoy the wonderful books!
