The "Last Hurrah for 6th Grade!"

This week our 6th graders celebrated the end of their time here at Glenbrook with a great day at Camp Duncan.  It was a long, exhausting day filled with fun, leadership, collaboration, science and exploration.  We hope they will take with them many great memories from their day at camp and the many, many good times they have shared with us at Glenbrook.

The Fun and Learning Continues!

Yes we are winding down the school year, but we are not winding down our learning or our fun!  Monday started off with a day full day of both fun and learning.  Mom's gathered with their children to celebrate Mother's Day with our Annual "Munchkin's for Moms."  This year we hosted more than 280 guests (1400 munchkins) for breakfast.  Thanks moms for all you do and for coming out to celebrate you!

Our 6th graders invited their families and other Glenbrook students out to a "visit around the world" on Monday as they presented their World's Fair Projects.  The students shared not only details and facts about their country, but compared life in the country they learned about with life in the United States.  Hundreds of guests enjoyed the tour. 

Our Chorus, conducted by Mrs. Kristine Cooper has worked weekly since November to prepare songs from Broadway for their concerts which were held this Thursday both for the students at 1:00 PM and for parents at 7:00 PM.  What memories the great songs brought back for all of us. It was hard to get the beloved tunes out of our heads! Our young ones really have fabulous talent!

The Greatest of Support!!!!

So many of our supports came out to assist and encourage us this week.  We saw our community come together in many ways to celebrate and honor our school, staff and students.  Take a look at the wonderful people that surround us at Glenbrook.

Mrs. Niemeier is retiring after 38 years of teaching orchestra in School District U-46. The staff and students will miss her greatly!  Many former students and colleagues came out to to see her conduct her final concert and hear the last song "Somewhere Over The Rainbow."  It was a heartwarming performance musicians! We will miss you Mrs. Niemeier!!!

 Mr. Antoshin continually amazes us at with the professional sound that his students are able to acquire in such a short about of time. Thanks to the parents who came out to support  their students for the final band concert for the 2015-2016 school year and thanks to Mr. Antoshin for all of his inspiration! Excellent performance musicians!

Each spring we hold a Family Reading Night and Book Fair. This time our 6th graders decided to "Lead the Way" and host the event!  They planned story sessions that involved reading and craft projects for other students in the school.  This was a great way to work on their own speaking, listening and presentation skills while helping our younger students practice their own reading, writing and listening skills.  What a fabulous job they did and it was a great night too! A big thank you to our PTA who supplied pizza, supplies and ran the book fair.  

 

                

On Wednesday former Glenbrook Parent and Comcast representative Mrs. Debra Marton came to our school as the "Principal for a Day."  She worked very hard reading to students, talking about the importance of school, jobs and working in the community.  The students loved asking her questions and hearing all about her career at Comcast.  

Thanks to Matt of Wheaton Bible Church and Pastor Will from the Future Tri-Village Community Church, along with their members. We were chosen for a community service project for Community Care Days!  About 40 church members came out and beautified our school grounds.  Take a look  and see for yourself. What a great community partner we have!  

Glenbrook Students Give to Global Causes

It's always great to see Glenbrook students taking initiative to raise money and collect items to help our friends all around the world.  There have been several fundraising campaigns throughout the school year to help those "neighbors" who are struggling for the even most basic life needs.  This year Mrs. Dauksavages' and Mrs. Smith's IGNITE Classrooms joined in a district level cause to collect shoes for the people in Syria.  Thanks to the generosity of our students and their families, we have collected over 250 pairs of shoes for our friends in Syria. 

Ms. Reiser's class heard about the work of the IGNITE classrooms and they too had an idea of how they could help their friends and families across the globe. Bryan Sanchez, a second grader had family who was affected by the earthquake in Ecuador, so he and his classmates decided to get the school on board raising funds to support those families in need. See the wonderful letter and poem that Bryan and his friends wrote to help raise money for this great cause!

Just as we like to support others, it's nice to know we have our very own supporters. The family of Alexa Rae Bertram, former student of Glenbrook Elementary, donated an entire collection of Harry Potter books to our Glenbrook library in honor of Alexa who tragically passed away at a very young  age. Alexa enjoyed the series herself, so this was a great way for her mom and grandma to support Glenbrook students while honoring the memory of the beautiful Alexa!
