Family Fun and Learning at Glenbrook

This week our IGNITE classroom held a Marketplace and invited students, parents and staff to shop in their makeshift stores. Student businesses created business plans that involved product creation, marketing and budgeting in a free enterprise system. All had a great time shopping and the students learned about profit and loss too. It was a great "real world" learning experience.

 

Family Fun Fair

A favorite event every spring is our Family Fun Fair.  The night is filled with food, games, activities, raffles and prizes. We have hundreds of attendees and even many former students who come back to Glenbrook to volunteer and play as well.  Thanks to all who joined us and helped in some capacity. Thanks also to all of the area vendors who donated to the event.  It was a great night!

             

 

 

 

Math and Ice Cream; What a Great Combination!

Learning to play games is always fun, even math games! This week with the support of our PTA, we put a little spin on things at our Family Math Night/Ice Cream Social.  Teachers hosted a variety of math games for students and their parents.  For every game students played, they along with their parents earned a topping on their ice cream sundae!  It was not only a great learning experience, but delicious too! Thanks to the 140 students, siblings and parents who came out to play with us.

Kindergarten has come a long way!

My how our littlest students have grown! When they came back from spring break, I was convinced that each one of them grew a few inches. They really are beginning to look much more like first graders.  Take a look into some fun work that the students dove into during their first week back to school after a restful spring break.

The teacher models with the students the work that is expected of them. In this math module students have been learning to represent teens in a variety of ways. This week the students worked in partners to draw, manipulate and write "mystery numbers" that they had to count and represent with numerals, tallies, ten frames, drawings, number bonds and in number sentences.  No problem for them, they are almost first graders after all!!!!

Language development is also very important in kindergarten. Students need time to play and socialize with support from the classroom teacher in order to develop vocabulary and social skills. This is important in both the Dual Language and the traditional English Classrooms.

In the Dual Language Classroom the teacher will often use body motions, games and songs as well as props to help the students learn the new language, whether it be English or Spanish. The students love the games and pick up new vocabulary at the same time.

Technology of course always adds to the fun when you are learning. 

To make learning and social skills even more exciting the students earn "gotchas" for following Hawk Pride. They can then purchase small items when the school store comes to the classroom. It looks like this little one is ready to spend his "gotchas!"
