Veterans Day Celebration

There is nothing more heartwarming than listening to young people connect with our veterans. I'm always so proud of the questions and general interest our students have in the stories that all of the visiting veterans share. This week was no different as our students read books, wrote cards, did activities, and listened to interviews conducted with current and retired members of the military. The entire week was filled with learning about the significance of the holiday, and the sacrifices our veterans have made to keep us safe. Below are is a link to a wonderful video that includes a reading of Twenty-One Steps: Guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It also features an interview with one of the tomb guards. Some of our students were fortunate enough to watch the interview live. I think you'd all enjoy it. You can also see some additional photos from our Veterans' Day events link here in this week's blog.

 Dia Day Los Muertos

The Day of the Dead

This week our students worked together to learn all about Dia Day Los Muertos, The Day of the Dead.  Some of us were worried that the holiday was filled with scary skeletons, but we learned that this is not true. The skeletons, called calacas, are actually a way to remind us how alike we all are on the inside!

Our Dual Language Classrooms led this week's learning by teaching us about some of the history of the holiday throughout different regions in Mexico. The students also learned to make crafts such as flowers (cempasĂșchiles), skeletons (calacas), and paper banners (papel picado). Some classrooms even enjoyed making sugar skulls (calavera). The beautiful altar (ofrenda) displayed many photos, food, and pictures of loved ones as a way to commemorate their lives. Below you will find just a few photos of our celebrations this week.
