Celebrating Reading!
On Wednesday, October 24th we celebrated Read for the Record Day!  The actual event is really on October 25th, however, since students were not in school that day we moved it up.  Glenbrook staff and students didn't want to miss the opportunity for a celebration of literacy!

Linda Ragsdale - Author Visit
Mrs. Ragsdale is an award winning author, illustrator, speaker and peacemaker.  She shared an inspiring message with our children about difference, being open to one another and peace.  She has several wonderful books written for children about this topic which include beautiful illustrations.  If you are interested in learning her story her website is http://thepeacedragon.com/about/president-bio
After hearing about her books and her message of peace, the students were able to get their own copies of her books autographed. Then, several students, who were chosen from a "Gotcha raffle," enjoyed a reception of cookies and juice with the author. Thank you to our PTA for sponsoring the event.

Guest Readers
Read for the Record Day is an annual event that brings adults together with children in order to build literacy skills. This year we were luck enough to have 3 adults from our central office join our kindergarten and Exceptional Needs classrooms to read to them. A special thanks to Mr. Mario Pestana (not pictured), Mrs. Robyn Cornelissen and Mrs. Trisha Shrode along with 2 of our 4th grade students for helping us to enjoy the wonderful books!

Students' Protest in Writing

I'm so proud of the 6th graders in Mrs. Jagielski's class for their thoughtful protests as they share their opinions about why books should not be banned.  There are several amazing pieces of literature that some folks have determined are innappropriate for libraries across the United States and therefore should be banned at one time or another. Books such as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, James and the Giant Peach and  Harry Potter. Our students have thoughfully written essays about why they feel these books should not be banned.  A special thanks to Aarav Patel  and Aima Okhuoya for sharing their essays with our PTA.

Halloween Bash

Once again our Halloween Bash was a roaring success!  Thank you to Christine Bernaden for her organization of the event. A special thanks to Jose Alcantara who donated his time and equipment as the official D.J. for the event. Also thanks to all of our volunteers and the PTA for their support with the Bash. As with any of our events, we couldn't do it without you!
